Nurse Licensure Compact Action Page

Nurse licensure rules and regulations were formed when nursing was practiced primarily within the boundaries of one or two states. With the development of managed care, tele-health and mobile populations, nurses are frequently required to work with patients who travel or reside across multiple state lines. Unlike drivers licenses, many state nursing licenses are not recognized by other states. (CMSA website, 2007)

The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) is a mutual recognition model for nurse licensure. This Compact allows a nurse to have one license (in his or her state of residency) and to practice in other states (both physical and electronic) that also belong to the Compact. Practice is still subject to each state's practice law and regulation. However, in today's increasingly electronic world, this mutual recognition model allows a nurse to practice across state lines without the administrative burden of obtaining licensure in multiple states.

There are currently 20 states participating in the Compact and two more states pending implementation in 2007. CMSA has undertaken an effort to "seek a mutual recognition of nurse licensures within all States and remove regulatory barriers to increase access to safe nursing care". For 2007, CMSA is directing its primary efforts to have this legislation introduced in states that have not joined the Compact. For this inaugural effort to be successful WE NEED THE SUPPORT OF MEMBERS LIKE YOU!
